Hakone Estate and Gardens invites you to attend Japanese Gardening Classes
Gardening class coordinator and chief instructor Peter Thomas Bowyer specializes in scenic creations for people who want to bring nature into their dwelling. He has designed and built gardens in California and Japan; led volunteers pruning at Hakone Estate and Gardens and other public parks; and interpreted natural landscapes throughout California.

Hands-on pruning practice, if any, shall be on materials we bring to classroom. Bring your own container plants, cut branches, hand-shears, and/or photos of plants.

Learn Japanese garden layout, construction, and maintenance using images, lecture, chalkboard, question, and answer. Topics include: Human use; site characteristics; artistic expression; historical architecture & garden styles; indoor-outdoor relationships; structures; enclosure; topography; uses of stone; water features; plants; design devices such as forced perspective, diagonal and triangular movement, borrowed scenery, hide & reveal, etc.

An introduction to the aesthetics, horticulture, and aesthetic pruning of Japanese Maples. Learn their growing environment, physiology, life cycle, varieties, design uses, buying, planting, culture, and problems. Learn to integrate aesthetics & arboriculture and solve problems in a holistic way.
