?The History of New Almaden?Once the Largest Mine in California? will be presented on Monday, January 17 at 7:15 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church (14103 Saratoga Avenue in Saratoga) by noted authors and local historians Art Boudreault and Mike Boulland. The lecture is free and sponsored by the Saratoga Historical Foundation.
New Almaden, once the oldest and richest mine in California is located south of San Jose. Discovered in 1845, its quicksilver payload was crucial for gold and silver processing and manufacturing munitions. Boudrealt and Boulland give in-character presentations through the eyes of James B. Randol, mine manager from 1870 to 1892 and Robert Bulmore, his successor who was also an accomplished photographer. The presentation includes photos of the mine, mining process, and the area. Although the mines are now closed, Casa Grande, the mine manager?s home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1963.
